Lot No. 202

Michelangelo Ricciolini

(Rome 1654–1715 Frascati) Annunciation, oil on copper, 40 x 30 cm, framed,

We are grateful to Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome, who has identified this painting as a work by Ricciolini (e-mail to the consignor of January 2010). Ricciolini, who came from a large Roman painter dynasty, produced an oeuvre which stands at the pinnacle of the Roman Baroque. He was responsible for some of the most impressive fresco cycles in the city. Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni commissioned him to produce the decorative schemes for the Palazzo della Cancelleria (1691/93). He painted the ceiling frescoes of the gallery in the Palazzo Spada in 1698/99. Strongly influenced overall by the classicism of the Maratta kind, he drew his inspiration from earlier art, as is evident in this painting. Thus there are comparable compositions in the work of the previous generation of great Bolognese Roman classicists, such as Agostino Carracci or Francesco Albani, who produced similar annunciations.
